Peer experiences from five Arab countries and international expertise at the service of cultural development in south Mediterranean countries

June 9, 2015 Amm

Representatives of the ministries of culture of five Arab countries (Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine, Tunisia and Morocco) took part in an innovative workshop organised by the EU-funded regional programme Med Culture at the Royal Film Commission in Amman, Jordan on Monday June 8, 2015 through Tuesday June 9, 2015.

This regional peer to peer workshop, innovative both in approach and the process it promotes, focused on improving the governance of the culture sector in the respective countries whereby informed decision and policy making are key to addressing the challenges and needs in the sector. Best practices from the region were shared demonstrating how data collection, access to information could feed into constructive public-private partnerships. This was especially highlighted with the participation of civil society practitioners from the region contributing their experiences on the theme. Participants also worked on the definition of methodologies to develop strategic action plans for culture, promotion of inter-ministerial coordination, and broadening access to cultural activities in peripheral areas. International experts were involved as well to accompany the process and ensure a concrete outcome.

On a separate but related event, Med Culture held the first meeting of the Jordanian “National Focus Group” on the development of the cultural sector in the country with the participation of representatives of ministries of Culture, Higher Education & Scientific Research, Tourism & Antiquities, Labour, Planning & International Cooperation, as well as Jordanian artists and cultural practitioners on 9 June, 2015 at the Royal Film Commission. During the meeting participants discussed the suggested activities planned for Jordan in 2015 based on two roundtable consultations held in Amman with the Jordanian authorities and cultural practitioners earlier in April 2014.

Med Culture is a 4-year (2014-2018) regional programme funded by the European Union to accompany partner countries in south of the Mediterranean in the development and improvement of cultural policies and practices related to the culture sector.
