Clarification Is Needed On How Free Is Free Education

A parent came to the Foroyaa Office with a bill amounting to 3500 dalasis to make enquiries whether the information being spread that government has introduced free education up to the high school level is true or not and further seek for assistance if the story is not true. This makes it urgent for the authorities to make government policy clear to the people. As far as we know free education for girls only affects fees to be paid in Government schools. The information delivered on political Party platform or during tours appears to be mere promises and not policies.

Their pronouncement however creates difficulties to the poor who are constantly challenged when they seek for assistance. Foroyaa wishes to request associations interested in education for all in general and girls’ education in particular to conduct research to find out how many school going children are staying out of school because of financial difficulties. The numbers seem to be getting larger and larger.

We hope those who could afford to assist students would contact the Foroyaa office to declare their intention so that as students approach the office for assistance they could be referred to those willing to sponsor them. Nothing is more honourable and enduring than to contribute to the educational development of a human being.
