A renowned Moroccan breast cancer surgeon and a legal practitioner Thursday announced plans to establish the first ever Breast Cancer Surgery Institute in the country by October 2014.

Professor Raja Aghzhadi, also The Gambia’s honorary consul to the Kingdom of Morocco, made the disclosure at State House in Banjul during her meeting with the vice president and Women’s Affairs minister.

Led to the presidency by The Gambia’s ambassador to the Kingdom of Morocco, Lamin Kabba Bajo, Professor Raja is currently on a visit to the country to raise awareness about the devastating effects of breast cancer that puts the lives women at greater risk.

The proposed Gambia project is part of her continued efforts to combat the debilitating ailment of breast cancer, which is coming after her active campaign in many countries.

Hoping to share her wealth of expertise in the country, the renowned surgeon told Vice President Aja Dr. Isatou Njie-Saidy that her breast cancer institute, called Cour de Femme (Court for Women) is currently operating in Senegal.

She told VP Njie-Saidy that should the Gambian authorities support the establishment of the institute, it will be a great gesture to the country’s women folk. “Together, we can preserve the breast from infections,” she said.

Given the alarming increase of this fatal disease, Professor Aghzhadi stressed the need for policy makers, opinion leaders and women organisations to remain vigilant at all times and to take action before being victims of breast cancer.

“We will work to ensure that what I am doing in Morocco and other countries are replicated in The Gambia too in the fight against breast cancer infections. I wish that no woman go through breast cancer infection,” she assured.

While expressing her appreciation to the president of the Republic, the vice president and the entire Gambian people for their continued support over the past years, Professor Aghzhadi called for the contribution of everyone to make the establishment of the institute possible.

In her response, VP Njie-Sady welcomed the proposal and assured Professor Aghzhadi that The Gambia will be prepared for the establishment of the institute.  She thanked her for the passion and interest she has devoted in the area of breast cancer.

The veep dilated on the relationship between The Gambia and Morocco, saying First Lady Zaineb Jammeh herself has a special interest in breast cancer sensitisation.

The VP acknowledged that breast cancer is killing many women; something she said has now become a concern for everyone. “So let us help ourselves because women will not forgive us if we don’t help them,” she added.

Ambassador Lamin Kabba Bajo at the occasion said The Gambia highly values Professor Aghzhadi’s contribution both as honorary consul and a medical practitioner. He assured her of the government’s unwavering support at all times.

The Health and Social Welfare minster, Omar Sey, thanked Professor Aghzhadi for the heart she has for The Gambia, assuring her of his Ministry’s and that of the government’s commitment and support in this worthy venture.

The Minister of Lands and Regional Government, Momodou F.K. Colley, also thanked Professor Aghzhadi for coming up with this idea, saying health is a critical sector that cannot be compromised.
