The outgoing country representative of the World Health Organisation (WHO) has disclosed that a total sum of US$74M was ably mobilised by them for The Gambia during his five-year spell in the country. He said this was provided through the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (GFATM).

Dr. Thomas Sukwa was speaking Thursday at State House in Banjul where he was bade farewell by the vice president and Women’s Affairs minister, Her Excellency Aja Dr. Isatou Njie-Saidy. He disclosed that The Gambia is now at a pre-elimination stage of malaria, observing that since the intervention of the fund, the mortality rate has drastically dropped from 200 deaths annually to 150.

In addition to the fund, Dr Sukwa said his office has also provided technical support to the government in the health sector, saying The Gambia is today one of the first countries that effectively embraces the fight against Non Communicable Diseases (NCD).  “This is among the reasons why the government set up the health promotion department at the Ministry of Health,” he said.

He informed that during his tenure in the country, he also tried to strengthen the Expanded Programme on Immunisation with the successful introduction of three major vaccines in the country.

While expressing appreciation to the government and the people of The Gambia for their support and collaboration during his tenure, the Zambian-born WHO official said he has done his best to level the way for his successor.

The vice president, Aja Dr. Isatou Njie-Saidy, commended Sukwa for the effective work he did during his tenure, saying the entire Gambian people are appreciative of that.

She said: “You have been quite a very effective person during your tenure here. Your presence in the country has greatly contributed to the reduction of malaria rate cases and other diseases.”

The VP acknowledged that not only did Dr Sukwa maintain a close working relationship with the Ministry of Health, but has intervened in anything that is health related. While assuring Sukwa of Gambia’s support at all time, the VP extended to him, President Jammeh, his government and the entire Gambian people’s appreciation for his efforts.

The minister of Health and Social Welfare, Omar Sey, said The Gambia is appreciative of Dr Sukwa`s efforts and contributions to the development of its health sector.

Meanwhile, Dr Sukwa is expected to leave The Gambia soon for the South African country of Lesotho where he will take up a new appointment.
