The Gambia’s Foreign Affairs minister has underscored the need for African countries to promote trade between themselves for the way forward, and hailed the first ever Egypt International Exhibition currently underway at the Paradise Suites Hotel in Kololi.

The Expo, which officially took off Wednesday is being organised by the Egypt Expo Company in collaboration with the Gambia Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI). The Expo that will wrap up on the 14th of September 2014 brought Egyptian business in The Gambia.

Minister Balla Garba-Jahumpa said The Gambia is proud to be, associated with the exhibition that features Egyptian products. “The Expo is what Africa needs on the African continent; for African countries to exchange experiences and trade commodities between them,” he said. ‘The exhibition has advantages for both The Gambia and Egypt. It will attract Egyptian investors and tourists into The Gambia” he said.

Hon Jahumpa noted that the Expo would avail GCCI and the Gambian private sector the opportunity to do some networking with the Egyptian brothers and sisters currently in The Gambia. “It will also give opportunity to GCCI to twin with Egyptian Chamber of Commerce,” he opined.

The chief executive officer of GCCI, Alieu Secka, disclosed that the Chamber has been inviting other nationalities to take part in the annual trade fair. “We are pleased that we are having new entrants into The Gambia’s trade and business,” he said.

Secka noted that Egypt Expo brought variety of products from Egypt and Middle East to the Gambia, describing the event as in line with the GCCI mandate of building partnerships.

The GCCI CEO said one of the things that  pleases them more is when people come to The Gambia by choice, saying the Chamber doesn’t take this for granted because there are many other destinations that could have been chosen.

"Few months ago when Egypt Expo contacted GCCI, we were pleased that they came to us. We are also particularly happy that we are able to support them to see that this has come true,” he concluded.

Speaking on behalf of fellow Egyptians, Dr. Emacl Atrees stated that The Gambia and Egypt have enjoyed a warm relationship over the past years, stressing the need to further strengthen the collaboration between Banjul and Cairo.

Atrees noted that the Expo is not only about showcasing Egyptian products, and  called on Gambians to use the opportunity to do business with their colleagues from Egypt.
