gambiaMexico recovered from two successive friendly defeats to register a formidable five goal haul against Gambia in rain-soaked Bayreuth, Germany.

Following on from losses against England and the Netherlands, Javier Aguirre’s team made short work of the Gambians, winning convincingly thanks largely to contributions from the Chivas contingent.

In-form striker Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez scored twice, to bring his tally to three in his last two internationals; he joins Manchester United after the World Cup.

A further brace from Adolfo Bautista, as well as a late strike from Alberto Medina, helped secure the win on a poor, muddy surface.

Hernandez put his side into a 1-0 lead on the 18 minute mark with a right-footed shot but Mexico had to wait until after the half-time interval for another breakthrough.

The goal came again via ‘Chicharito’; this time from close range in the 50th minute on the back of a team move, and it was followed five minutes later by Bautista’s first of the evening. The under-utilised Chivas front-man latched onto a Medina through pass and maintained his composure to slot home.

Gambia responded and pulled one back through Ebrima Bohna on 65 minutes but it did not take Mexico long to add further to their rout.

With 15 minutes to play ‘Bofo’ struck again before Medina rounded off the scoring nine minutes from time at a darkening Hans Walter Wild stadium.

El Tri have been drawn alongside South Africa, France and Uruguay in Group A of the World Cup and face the hosts on June 11.
