Gambia - Solo Sandeng Picked up by NIA

 Mr. Ebrima Solo Sandeng, the Executive Secretary of the UDP youth wing was today Monday December 9th 2013 picked up by the NIA from his house in Serrekunda and taken to their headquarters in Banjul The Gambia. Mr. Sandeng called his colleagues while en route to Banjul with the NIA and spoke to some of upon his arrival to confirm his custody and location.  A UDP youth delegation then quickly made their way to NIA offices in Banjul but they were told Mr. Sandeng was not held there.  The delegation then decided to go to Police Headquarters in Banjul to report the abduction of their colleague by the NIA. At Police Headquarters they were told the notification needed to be filed in Serrekunda since that was the jurisdiction the abduction occurred.  The delegation drove back to Serrekunda and filed a missing persons report with the police there.

These unprecedented gatherings are the result of the ongoing collaboration between the opposition parties on the ground and the diverse diaspora community as represented by the Committee For The Restoration of Democracy in The Gambia (CORDEG).The purpose of the rallies are to bring all the forces of democracy under one tent and then jointly fight the necessary battle to end tyranny. 

Gambia - Forum discourages stigmatisation, discrimination against HIV/AIDS patients

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Thursday convened a daylong forum for stakeholders in the fight against HIV/AIDS, designed among other things, to discourage stigmatisation and discrimination of people living with the disease.

 

The forum also created the opportunity for information sharing, consensus building on key development issues, facilitation of dissemination of best practices and strengthening of policy making for the government of The Gambia. 

EU Halts Future Funding For the Jammeh Government For Now, As Member States Are Not Impressed With Gambia’s Governance And Right Record!

 

It doesn’t look like the European Union will ever approve the remaining 10 Million Euros that were earmarked for Gambia’s deplorable road network—largely due to concerns raised by some EU Member countries about the situation of human rights and governance in the Gambia, the Freedom Newspaper can report. The vote to approve or disapprove the remaining funds was scheduled for Thursday, but due to the rising opposition coming from some EU member states for the funds to be put on hold until situation of governance improves in the Gambia, the vote was deferred until next month—December 6.  The latest stalemate is a big blow to the dying Jammeh regime, which is in desperate need of funds to keep the wheel of government running.

“Vote postponed until 6 December because member states are demanding improvement on human rights,” said our source close to Gambia’s Foreign Ministry.  “This is yet another big setback in our quest to get funding from the EU. It was tough for us to get the 3 Million Euros from them,” our source added.

Gambia - Kanimang Sanneh hands over to Omar Sampo Ceesay

Confirmed sources have told the Daily Observer Thursday that the former chairman of the Basse Area Council (BAC) has been appointed the governor of the Upper River Region (URR) with immediate effect.

 

Omar Sampo Ceesay took the baton from Kanimang Sanneh, who hitherto this development, was celebrating his appointment as the acting governor of the region.

 

Readers would recall that Kanimang Sanneh, a native of Sandi Kunda and former Jimara lawmaker took over the keys from a long-serving governor, Omar Khan, in September, this year.

Gambia - UDP treasurer denied bail for third time

The National Treasurer of the opposition United Democratic Party (UDP), Amadou Sanneh, was yesterday denied bail for the third time by the Special Criminal Court in Banjul.

Amadou Sanneh was arraigned alongside Malang Fatty and Sambou Fatty and charged with conspiracy to commit an act with seditious intention, sedition, possession of seditious publication and false swearing.

Delivering the ruling, Justice Nkea stated that by summons taken out on 7 November, 2013, R.Y Mendy, counsel, was urging upon the court to admit the 3rd accused herein to bail pending the hearing and determination of the charges now pending against him before the court.

Malamin Jatta, Director of Lands died last night during an automobile accident, sources close to the Lands Ministry said. The accident has been blamed to bad roads. Gambia's road network is in deplorable condition. Almost all the roads are in tatters.

The former Gambian Ambassador in Taiwan Ebrima Jarju and his Embassy staff are expected to leave Taiwan tonight at 8 PM for Banjul after the severing of diplomatic ties between the Gambia and Taiwan, the Freedom Newspaper can report. The Gambia was maintaining a fully functional Embassy in Taipei, until the recent move by Banjul to terminate diplomatic ties with Taiwan.

The Ambassador and his staff are leaving Taiwan with a heavy heart. Gambia's erratic and delusional President Yahya Jammeh terminated Gambia's ties with Taiwan without informing Ambassador Jarju. Jarju told the Taiwanese press that the decision for the Gambia to sever ties with Taiwan was a news to him adding that no one in Banjul has consulted him.

The paramount chief (PC) of the Gambia, Alhaji Demba Sanyang, has said that groundnut production is a tool to enhance socio-economic development.

 

Chief  Sanyang was speaking to the Daily Observer on Tuesday at his 5-hectare groundnut farm in Lamin, Kombo North District. According to him, he is responding to the clarion call of the Gambian leader for people to ‘grow what they eat and eat what they grow’.
