The Mighty European Union, including the other Gambian donor partners must be laughing at the Gambian dictator Yahya Jammeh, who told us barely some months ago, before parting company with Taiwan, that he doesn’t need the West’s “chicken change” aid money.  Guess what? The broke ass dictator’s administration is unable to pay workers salaries. We have reached a stage that things are falling apart in the Gambia. Gambian workers have been working for months without pay. And the salary nonpayment is a recipe for instability. Civil disobedience is inevitable if these poor workers are not paid.

At Gamtel, the nation’s main telecommunication carrier, workers there have not been paid their November salaries. We are now in December and yet Gamtel staffers have not been paid. Their salary for December is not guaranteed since the company’s bank accounts are in the red. Gamtel has been relying on bank overdrafts to pay staff salaries.

Also affected by the salary nonpayment is the National Drug Enforcement Agency, (NDEA). Anti narcotic officers said they have not been paid for months. There are no funds to pay drug squad agents. The NDEA is under the office of the President. Many agents have been reporting to work without money to feed their families. Some of the NDEA agents said they have not been paid for three months. Their bosses kept telling them that there is no money at this time to pay workers salaries.

As a result of the cash shortage crisis, some NDEA agents are resorting to accepting bribes from drug dealers. Many drug cases are being settled out of court. The NDEA’S drug apprehension rate has declined sharply in recent months. This is largely attributed to low staff morale and lack of timely salary payment.

Those mostly affected by the salary crisis are dictator Jammeh’s farm and utility staff. Dictator Jammeh’s local staffs at his farm and bakeries around the country are also complaining about not being paid by their employer Yahya Jammeh. The staff at the Kanilai Bakery for example, said they have not been paid for three months. Jammeh owns a bakery chain nationwide. His workers told the Freedom Newspaper that for months they have not been paid. Some of the Jammeh Bakery workers said they are paid a monthly salary of D300 dalasi and D700 dalasi barely less than $50 US dollars. The dictator is heavily indebted to his workers.

The Social Security and Housing Finance Corporation, the nation’s main pensioners’ retirement program has also been rendered bankrupt by Jammeh and his cronies. The SSHFC accounts are in the red. The prastatal has been relying on bank overdrafts to pay salaries. Almost all the institutions in the Gambia are on the verge of collapsing.

The EU and other donor partners should further tighten the economic sanctions. Jammeh cannot survive on the face of such economic turbulent. His popularity ratings have declined sharply. He has been accused of neglecting the economy and the infrastructure in pursuit of his own economic needs.
