The vice president and Women’s Affairs minister has renewed the call for a strong and genuine public-private sector partnership in the drive towards the attainment of the ‘Vision 2016 Rice Self-Sufficiency Agenda’, which was launched by President Jammeh to break the culture of food importation into the country. The veep said this sort of partnership could have the potential of attaining food self-sufficiency for The Gambia even beyond the target deadline of 2016.

Her Excellency Aja Dr. Isatou Njie-Saidy was speaking Thursday at her office during a meeting with officials of Action Aid International The Gambia, who were at the presidency to brief her on the recent activities of the organisation, including the new global changes it is undergoing.

The veep hastened to acknowledge AAITG and by extension its international federation, as one of The Gambia government’s genuine partners that have complemented it’s efforts in many areas including the fight against poverty and food insecurity.

She reminded the AAITG officials that though the government is working tirelessly towards the realisation of the ‘Vision 2016’ initiative, the collaboration of the private sector in this regard cannot be less underscored. “Action Aid has made credible achievements in the country and now with a common vision, we can make more changes,” she said.

She added: “All the intervention areas of the organisation are equally critical, and they all fit within the Vision 2016 target. President Jammeh has placed a high premium on young people to move national development. Today, we have very good indicators in the Demographic and Health Survey.”

Renewing government’s commitment and support to broadening its cooperation with the organisation, the vice president equally thanked them on behalf of the people of The Gambia for their decades of support. “You have made an impact in rural development and are now concentrating in the urban areas,” she acknowledged.

The Agriculture minister, Solomon Owens, said the sustainability of agriculture is now the focus of The Gambia government. He noted that the creation of a National Food Security Corporation, a brainchild of President Jammeh as part of his Vision 2016 initiative, will lead to more private sector involvement in the agriculture sector. “Building resilience of the farmers is another strategy to achieving vision 2016. Once we address resilience, our impact is upgrading the lives of the people,” he said.

The Interior minister, Ousman Sonko, said Action Aid’s intervention areas are strategic and are in line with Gambia government’s targets particularly in agriculture.

The new country director of Action Aid International The Gambia, Omar Badjie, acknowledged what he called the tremendous support extended to his office by The Gambia government in the past years. He revealed that his office has developed a five-year ‘Country Strategic Plan’ (CSP), which he said, was formulated in a participatory manner.

“In the CSP, Action Aid The Gambia has core targets which include ensuring sustainability and development, empowerment of youth and women rights issues, and the fight against HIV/AIDS and malaria. As we renew our commitment to national development, we also solicit the support of the government in the future implementation of the CSP targets,” he further remarked.
