GambiaThe Gambian leader, His Excellency Sheikh Professor Alhaji Dr Yahya Jammeh, Thursday afternoon held talks with the special envoy of the president of the Republic of Guinea Bissau, who paid a courtesy call on him at State House.

The special envoy, Retired Colonel Omar US Embalo, minister of State for African Affairs and International Cooperation of Guinea Bissau, told the State House press corps shortly after his closed-door meeting with President Jammeh, that he was sent to The Gambia by his president, His Excellency Malam Becai Sanha to deliver a special message to his Gambian counterpart.

He disclosed to reporters that his meeting with President Jammeh was among other things meant to fortify the existing bond of relations and cooperation between the two countries. He said: “As you know we are brothers and sisters and our presidents are brothers.” The Bissau-Guinean envoy explained that his meeting with the Gambian leader was also meant to solicit advice from him [President Jammeh] in areas of governance, the maintenance of peace and unity, amongst a host of others, noting that it is important to take advice and listen to such a leader, whom he described as very experienced in leadership.

“He [President Sanha] sent me here to take advice from President Jammeh who has been into leadership long before President Sanha. So we took advice and also informed him about the real situation in Guinea Bissau,” he said. He hailed President Jammeh for his stance in promoting peace and unity, while describing The Gambia as an exemplary country in terms of peace and stability. He opined that The Gambia, though small in size and population, is a great nation that can share its experience with other sister countries.

“This country is peaceful and we really want to see all countries to be like The Gambia because we don’t buy peace. We had this experience [instability] because we had been fighting for a long time and destroyed our country. So this is why from time to time we come here to listen to the president [Jammeh] and learn from his experience,” he stated.

The special envoy also seized the opportunity to declare that there is normalcy and stability in Guinea Bissau under the leadership of President Sanha. While recalling the past instability in his country, Embalo hinted that they have overcome some of the problems they used to encounter in the past.  “But we want to be stable like The Gambia one day,” he added.

To this end, he seized the opportunity again to reiterate Bissau’s gratitude to President Jammeh for “everything he has done to make peace in Guinea Bissau”.

The Bissau-Guinean emissary also applauded the Gambian leader’s vast knowledge in virtually all sectors of development, including education, agriculture, health, and so on. “President Jammeh is somebody that if you talk to him about economy, he is there; if you talk to him about education, agriculture, he knows. So we talked about a lot of issues,” he added.
