GambiaThe Gambian leader, His Excellency Sheikh Professor Alhaji Dr Yahya Jammeh Wednesday night conferred the prestigious award of Officer of the Republic of The Gambia ORG (honorary) on Tashawna S Bethea, political and economic officer at the American Embassy in Banjul, in recognition of her immense contributions towards the socio-economic development of The Gambia.

The decoration ceremony, which took place in Kanilai was witnessed by the United States ambassador to The Gambia, His Excellency Barry Wells, cabinet ministers and international delegates, amongst others. Bethea's decoration came barely 24 hours after President Jammeh decorated six distinguished personalities, all from the United States of America at the same venue in Kanilai in recognition of their selfless service to humanity. A  citation for Bethea, a young diplomat, highlighting her experiences and achievements was read by the secretary general and head of the Civil Service, Mariama Khan.

Reacting to the award, Tashawna Bethea described it as surprising, saying it meant a lot for her. "It means a lot to me just because I have tried very hard to do my best to help people here in The Gambia," she stated, adding: "I felt like this was a recognition of the work that I have been doing." She then expressed gratitude to President Jammeh for recognising her efforts and rewarding her for that. She further stated that the award serves as a motivation for her, expressing hope to continue what she described as the good work she has been doing.
